DIFFERENT TYPES OF VISAS

There are different visas each with certain amounts of time the holder is allowed to stay legally within the country.  The tourist visa is good for a maximum of 3 months at one time before you are supposed to exit the country.

Processing time for most visas:
By mail, third party or courier: 15 business days.
In person or through a household family member: 5 business days.

Types of Visa

    Tourist Visa - Stay in Brazil for up to 90 days for tourism purposes.      PROCESSING TIME
     Cultural Visa - This visa allows the bearer to stay in Brazil from 60 days up to 2 years depending on the purpose of the trip. For exchange students and interns the validity of Vitem I is limited to 1 (one) year not extendable.     This type of visa can be issued to persons who wish to travel to Brazil for cultural, study or training purposes, such as:

# Researchers, professors or members of cultural, technological or scientific missions, paid by corporation or any other entity based in Brazil for services rendered. This visa allows the bearer to stay up to 30 days, non-renewable. If there will be no payment, you may qualify for a Tourist Visa.

# Researchers, professors or members of cultural, technological or scientific missions employed by a foreign institution associated with high level studies and/or research, going to Brazil for scientific and technological cooperation with Brazilian entity without payment.

# Technicians, service providers, volunteers, specialists, scientists and researchers under the umbrella of an international cooperation program;

# Technicians traveling to Brazil in order to receive training in the operation/maintenance of machinery or equipment made in Brazil;

# Interns and other unpaid trainees. To qualify for this visa, the trainee must intend to receive practical training during his/her studies of high level which will contribute to his/her professional improvement.

# Amateur athletes under 21 years of age, taking part in unpaid training programs in Brazil;

# Exchange students

    Business Visa * Business Visa holders are not allowed to engage in any paid activity under employment contract with a Brazilian entity. This visa allows the bearer to stay in Brazil for up to 90 days, renewable by the immigration authorities for more 90 days. The total stay in Brazil cannot exceed 180 days per year.
      
    * Bearers of a Business Visa intending to stay in Brazil for longer than 90 days must request at the Federal Police Department in Brazil an extension within the first 30 days of their first entry into the country;-                                                                                                                  
* Business Visa holders are not allowed to engage in any paid activity under employment contract with a Brazilian entity. This visa allows the bearer to stay in Brazil for up to 90 days, renewable by the immigration authorities for more 90 days. The total stay in Brazil cannot exceed 180 days per year.
      
    * Bearers of a Business Visa intending to stay in Brazil for longer than 90 days must request at the Federal Police Department in Brazil an extension within the first 30 days of their first entry into the country;

    Athletes/Artists Visa - Temporary Visa for artists or athletes participating in performing arts or sporting events.  Contact your local Consulate for more info.
    Student Visa - * Student Visa (Vitem IV) holders are not allowed to engage in any paid activity in Brazil;      

    * Student Visa (Vitem IV) will be valid for up to 1 year; in Brazil, one month prior to visa expiration, applicant may file a request for an extension with the Federal Police Department

    * This type of visa can be issued to persons who travel to Brazil as students, enrolled in a duly recognized school, institution of technical studies, university or institution of higher learning, accredited by the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC); students on scholarship or exchange programs with a Brazilian institution of higher learning;
    * Religious workers who intend to travel to Brazil as students of any level.

    Work Visa - This type of visa can be issued to persons who travel to Brazil to work and/or perform any services under contract, including scientists, researchers, technicians or professionals
    Resident Journalists/Media Correspondents Visa -
  • This type of visa can be issued to all persons who travel to Brazil as media correspondents, such as journalists, radio or television newspersons;
     
  • It is usually issued to those who are assigned for a long-term service
    Resident Missionaries Visa - This type of visa can be issued to all persons who travel to Brazil for religious/missionary purposes without payment or labor contract with any Brazilian entity. This visa is issued for a stay period of one year, renewable;
    Permanent Visa - (I HAVE A PERMANENT INVESTORS VISA)
TO REQUEST THE AUTHORIZATION FOR A PERMANENT VISA THE APPLICANT MUST COME IN PERSON.
 This visa may be issued to: 
  • those who have previous authorization from the Ministry of External Relations, requested by the employer, presenting contract of work approved by the Ministry of Labor in Brazil;
     
  • Those who are professors, scientists, high level researchers who intend to work in public or private entities related to high studies, scientific and technological research. This visa is issued for those who intend to stay longer than 2 years. If you are not staying in Brazil for more than 2 years, you may qualify for a Temporary Visa V. Attention: Your Company must apply for your visa directly with the Ministry of Labor in Brazil. As soon as we receive the formal letter from Brazil, you will have to come in person to get your visa;
     
  • Those who have had Permanent residency in Brazil but stayed abroad for a period of 2 or more years uninterruptedly for the following reasons: complete studies of graduation or higher, professional training or research activities accredited by the Ministry of Science and Technology. You may submit your petition directly to the Consulate;

  • Those who are traveling to Brazil as investor, administrator or Director of a Company located in the Zona de Processamento de Exportação – ZPE. This visa must be requested by the Company directly with the Ministry of Labor in Brazil. As soon as we receive the formal letter from the Brazilian Government, you will have to come in person to get your visa;
     
  • Those who show proof of financial means to promote a direct investment in Brazil for an approximately amount of R$ 150.000,00 – Brazilian Reais. The exact amount is determined by the Ministry of Labor/National Immigration Council. The petition must be submitted by the Brazilian Company directly to the Ministry of Labor in Brazil;
     
  • Those who are retired persons whose pension (minimum of US $2,000.00 per month for the principal applicant and two dependants) can be regularly transferred to Brazil. In case of more than two dependants, it is mandatory to transfer to Brazil the extra amount of US$ 1,000.00 per person;
     
  • Those who are members of the clergy and belong to a religious order or congregation established in Brazil;
     
  • Those who are  relatives of a Brazilian citizen or alien permanent resident in Brazil;
     
  • Those who are married to a Brazilian citizen or a Permanent Resident;
     
  • Those who voluntarily intend to travel to Brazil to held position as director, manager or administrator of religious, social assistance or non governmental organizations. This visa may be issued for a period up to 5 years.
