BRAZIL TAKES OVER SOUTH FLORIDA

Brazilians are not only visiting  Sunny Isles Beach, but in record numbers, they’re investing and keeping real estate in Miami and most of South Florida going.

Suddenly, everything seems to be turning hot green and yellow. Brazilians are snapping up beachfront luxury properties specially in the city of Sunny Isles and going all the way to downtown Miami, they are investing in everything from real estate to big franchises, and shopping like there is no tomorrow.

“The trend now is Brazil in Maimi”  they are here to stay and buy Real Estate. Brazil has become one of the most important economies in South America and we see it every day. Their power of aquisition keep the Brazilian visitors coming to Miami to bring us part of their culture and most importantly “Their money”.

BRAZIL'S GROWING IMPORTANCE TO SOUTH FLORIDA (and the USA)

The U.S. is taking its relationship with Brazil for granted, and that may hurt South Florida’s economy.

South Florida has long been Brazil’s primary gateway to the U.S. marketplace. During the first 11 months of 2010, Florida’s merchandise trade with Brazil topped $14.4 billion, a 27 percent increase over 2009.

Brazilian tourists spend more money in Florida than in any other state. Thirty-five percent of real-estate buyers in downtown Miami are Brazilians.

However, in 2009, China became Brazil’s primary trading partner, surpassing the U.S. for the first time ever. The following year, China and Brazil signed several trade agreements boosting trade and energy co-operation.

By 2010, China took top honors as Brazil’s largest foreign investor.

BRAZIL LEADS THE PACK OF EMERGING MARKETS WORLDWIDE

The latest survey undertaken by members of the US-based Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE) pointed to Brazil’s market leading the ranking – putting the country in front of China and India.

James Fetgatter, chief executive officer and panelist at the ADIT conference  in Forteleza (May 10th-12th), commented that there ‘has not been any other country in Latin America that has shown the results that Brazil has – in 2007, the country was not even mentioned.’  He also, however, commented that the main obstacles that need to be confronted are a lack of transparency, issues over investment security and heavy bureaucracy.

At the same conference, Gary Garrabrant chief executive officer and co-founder of Equity International pointed to the issues the country still faces with regards to infrastructure and the high rates of interest on real estate loans.  In his talk, he stated that, despite the challenges: ‘our goal is to change this situation with positive results which will compensate the constraints.’

BRAZIL AIRPORTS UNLIKELY TO BE READY FOR 2014 WORLD CUP

Like Public Enemy said, "Don't believe the hype!"

Brazil is going to be ready.  I put the "independent" study down anyway so you can see what the business world is saying.  There is an interview with Lula that came on the show 60 Minutes (click here to view) where he is asked about the doubts that Brazil can handle the World Cup and the Olympics.  He just laughed them off and said basically Brazil is going to put on the best show ever and the country is going to get it done their way on their own terms.  To paraphrase him, he said Europeans and Americans think they know everything.

Thats why I quoted Public Enemy.  Brazil will be ready and symbolically rise up to the worldwide stage.  She will put her best foot forward and shine.

BRAZIL NEIGHBOR ARGENTINA POISED TO GROW IN 2011, BUT HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON BRAZIL ECONOMY

Argentina poised to grow 6% in 2011, but highly exposed to Brazil dependency

Strong demand in Brazil and Latin America has created the conditions for a stronger-than-expected economic rebound in Argentina, an IMF official said on Monday.
IMF economist Jorg Decressin recommends anti cyclical policies

“As far as growth is concerned, we are seeing a stronger rebound in Argentina than what we had expected, partly driven by very buoyant demand in the region including in Brazil” IMF economist Jorg Decressin told reporters in Washington.

However, he said Argentina needs to change some policies to be in stronger shape to withstand future shocks.

“Over time we believe that policies in Argentina will need to become somewhat less pro-cyclical than they are right now to rebuild policy space for the future. And if that happens, then the economy will also be in good shape to weather new shocks, if and when they arrive,” Decressin said.

BRAZIL TO INVEST $5.5 BILLION IN RENEWABLE ENERGY BY 2013

Brazil to Invest $5.5 Billion in Renewable Energy Sources by 2013

The Brazilian government earlier this month held a wind, hydroelectric and biomass auction that is expected to prompt US$ 5.52 billion in investments in renewable energies in Brazil. The resulting investments are expected to come primarily from private enterprise.

The auction, which contracted power from 89 wind farms, small hydroelectric plants and biomass plants, will add an installed capacity of 2,892.2 MW to the national energy matrix.

Brazil’s alternative energy auction was conducted through a process whereby the government first announced the energy demand stated by distributors to serve the market by 2013, and then electricity generators competed to provide energy to fill that demand at the lowest price.

BRAZIL BOOM: 9.1 MILLION FAMILIES PLAN TO BUY HOME IN NEXT 12 MONTHS

A total of 9.1 million families plan to buy real estate in Brazil over the next 12 months which is a huge increase since the Minha Casa Minha Vida (My House, My Life) program was introduced in 2009.

A recent survey carried out by the Data Popular Institute has found that 9.1 million Brazilian families intend to buy a property in Brazil over the next year. This purchase would allow them to leave rental accommodation and become property owners.

The subsidies and benefits included in the social housing program Minha Casa Minha Vida mean that buying instead of renting is an increasingly popular option. Minha Casa Minha Vida offers reduced mortgage interest rates to qualifying families so monthly mortgage payments are invariably cheaper than rent.

The number of potential buyers of Brazilian real estate has

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

No longer the “Country of the Future”… Brazil emerges as the   “Country of the Present”.

For a number of years, Brazil has been considered the “Country of the Future” due to its geographical size, growing population and abundant resources.  Historically Brazil continued to live up to this long standing reputation as the “Country of Future”, as it remained plagued by poor economic conditions, political instability,  poverty as well as immense socioeconomical and bureaucratic challenges.

In 1994, the governmental and business leaders launched a set of measures to stabilize the economy which, have resulted in Brazil securing a position as one of the top 10 largest economies in the world, an investment grade credit rating on its sovereign debt, and has set the stage for sustainable long-term growth for years ahead.  Today, Brazil is now positioned as the “Country of the Future” and is rapidly becoming one of the world’s economic powerhouses.

CHECK OUT THE PLANS FOR RIO FAVELAS TO GET FACELIFT

Check this out.  Rio de Janeiro has some big plans for their favelas...

Plans for Rio Favelas to Get Facelift

By Patricia Maresch, Contributing Reporter
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – It’s one of Rio’s biggest challenges before the start of the World Cup of 2014 and the Olympic Games of 2016: the transformation and urbanization of the city’s favelas (slums) while simultaneously pacifying them with the special UPP police force unit.

Urbanisation plan for Penha photo: Divulgação
Urbanization plan for Penha, photo Divulgação.

The government plans to invest US$600 million remodeling the favelas at the Complexo do Alemão and Complexo da Penha’s Vila Cruzeiro. Last month these two hillsides in Rio’s Zona Norte (North zone) were the scene of some of the worst violent episodes Rio has seen in recent memory.

The army and police now claim to have restored order, and now it’s time for the new phase of remodeling and development. In the wake of the city-wide violence and global media attention, Rio’s mayor Eduardo Paes announced the construction of 600 houses, 19 creches, five health clinics, a library, a garden, a cinema and a completely renewed infrastructure for this are of Zona Norte.

It’s all part of a bigger program named PAC 2, Brazil’s Growth Acceleration Program 2. A plan initiated by federal government to build US$800 billion worth of infrastructure between now and 2016 as the second phase of an economic stimulus program whose first phase has yet to be completed.

Apart from remodeling Alemão and Penha, PAC 2 also entails a six kilometer long monorail linking the heart of Tijuca, the Praça Saens Peña, to the favelas Salgueiro, Formiga and Borel. However, overhauling the favelas won’t be exclusive to Zona Norte, Rio plans to have all, almost 600, inner-city favelas redesigned and improved.

Rio’s largest favela, Rocinha in the Zona Sul (South zone) which already benefited from PAC 1, will get a 2.5 km high cable-car which will eventually hook up the favela with the future metro line Barra – Zona Sul. Other favelas that will benefit from the billion dollar project are Mangueira, Cidade de Deus, Batam, Juramento, Rio das Pedras and Favela Kelsons.

Some community leaders wonder if installing cable cars, monorails and swimming pools will be effective, and critics warn that it could all end up in a superficial makeover. The fear is that all plans will result in failure without major investment in education and job creation for residents of the favelas.

During the presentation of PAC 2 earlier this year, President Lula recognized the bureaucratic shackles that are delaying PAC 1 projects. After more than three years, just a little over 50 percent of the scheduled projects have been completed. Last week however, Lula said 82 percent will be finished by the end of this year.

The US is trying to contain Brazil by creating conflicts on its border, argues Uruguayan analyst, Raúl Zibechi.

altBrazil is now a big league player. In the decade in which it begins its ascent, the country is so important that it is forcing its main competitor in the region, the United States, to redesign its foreign policy to take into consideration Brazil's prominence, a tactic that might destabilize all of Latin America.

ROUSSEFF, BRAZIL'S PRES-ELECT SPEAKS ON CURRENCY WAR / CHINA INVESTS HEAVILY IN BRAZIL

Rousseff speaks on the currency war

November 2, 2010 5:10pm
by Barney Jopson

Dilma Rousseff, Brazil’s president-elect, has made her first comments on the “currency war” since winning Sunday’s election. This is the war in which Brazil’s outgoing finance minister told us the world was engaged and Rousseff, broadly speaking, stuck to the policy line he set out.
In separate television interviews, she said that “manipulating” exchange rates cannot resolve anything, that she would not do anything that “created confusion”, and that international organisations such as the G20 should be strong enough to “force certain countries” to value their currencies realistically.
We can only gather from those words that she does not view as problematic the kind of capital controls introduced - and recently tightened - by the government of her mentor, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Continuity is the watchword, but her comments leave plenty of questions unanswered. When she makes her international debut at the G20 meeting in Seoul next week, alongside Lula, she will no doubt deal with some of them.

The island rises in front of you like a lush, green paradise…its verdant hills fringed with thick, tangled mangroves and studded with tall palms. As you approach from the mainland causeway, Brazil’s Itamaracá looks like an oasis rising out of the Atlantic.

But the island’s western tropical forest is only half the picture. On the eastern shore, you’ll find bustling towns and miles of sandy beaches lining turquoise waters…with a protective reef just offshore.

And in reality, Itamaracá (pronounced ee tah mah rah KAH) is not as remote as it first appears. This

The Future of Latin America: Opportunities and Challenges for U.S. Policy in the Hemisphere

Today, I spoke to the students, faculty, and staff from Central Connecticut State University, including members of their Latin American Association and the Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Center. I laid out my vision for the future of U.S -- Latin America relations, calling for a fundamental shift in the United States' Latin American policy to reflect the region's changing economy and evolving democracy.

The Future of Latin America: Opportunities and Challenges for U.S. Policy in the Hemisphere:

I've been a Senator for a long time--but I've been passionate about Latin America for an even longer time.
In 1966, I arrived in the rural village of Moncion in the Dominican Republic as a volunteer for the Peace Corps. Today, nearly half a century later, I'm the chairman of the Senate subcommittee responsible for Latin American policy.

In between, I've had the privilege to take part in the implementation of the Guatemala City accord, lead the US-Mexico Senate Interparliamentary Group, and work to bring Latin American issues to the forefront of our foreign policy agenda.

And, in that time, Latin America has undergone remarkable change--much of it positive.
In a part of the world long defined by violent political instability and crushing poverty, we are seeing the development of a new middle class, the consolidation of democracy, the propagation of effective fiscal and social policies, and the rise of new global powers.

The Carnival happens in every city of the country, but no other city in Brazil

We know that this may sound strange to foreigners who always ask:
“what about Rio?” No doubt, the carnival parade in Rio is maybe the
most beautiful spectacle in the world, but if you are looking for real fun,
the Salvador Carnival is the place to go. Salvador Carnival is different
and bigger. If in Rio you are a spectator of the parade, in the Salvador
Carnival you are the show. If in Rio the carnival parades are done in two
days, the Salvador Carnival last one week!!!
