Is Brazil’s Economy Getting Too Hot?

Image via Wikipedia
Last night 60 Minutes featured a segment on Brazil entitled “The World’s Next Economic Superpower.” Eike Batista, Brazil’s richest man and the world’s eighth richest man (profiled by Forbes  in March) told Steve Kroft that it’s time for Americans to “wake up” to the economic giant to their south.
Many Americans have already been awake to Brazil for at least some time.
Just today, General Electric demonstrated its interest in Brazil when it announced a plan to buy subsea pipeline manufacturer Wellstream Holdings, which derives a “substantial portion” of revenues from Brazil, for $1.3 billion.

BUSINESS IN BRASIL: IT TOOK 3 MINUTES TO SELL TRUMP ON BRAZIL

Trump Women of Brazil learn moor about bahia brasil

This piece contains two stories.  One is obviously about the potential investing in South America, in particular in Brasil.  The other shows how persaverance and believing in yourself can pay off big time.  Business in Brasil is booming and everyone wants a piece of the action.

Much like Brazilian girls, Brazilian property is steaming hot and has been for some time now.  Brasil has definitely become the hottest emerging property market in Latin America, having just received what during the boom came to be known as the emerging market seal-of-approval, investment by Donald Trump and the well known Trump Organization.

An example of this seal of approval is Panama, during the boom Panama’s construction boom was the hottest in Latin America, and the world, at which point Trump graced it with a Trump Tower, a massive multi-purpose (commercial, luxury-residential, hotel, condos, casino(s)) sky-scraper in Panama City, which we have all no-doubt heard about.

NEW RICH CLASS: BRAZILIAN YACHT MARKET ON THE RISE

This Aug. 10 photo shows Marcio Christiansen, CEO of Ferretti Group Brazil, at the company's show room in Sao Paulo.
If the rising wealthy class in any indication, business is doing good in Brasil.

Marcio Christiansen reeled off tales of the growing ranks of rich Brazilians who visit his luxury Ferretti yacht showroom, where clients sip espressos on an oversized sable sofa and electronic music bubbles in the air.

One man paid $2 million for a ship, Christiansen said, after succumbing within 30 minutes to his kids' pleas of "Buy it, daddy, buy it!" Another toured the sparkling 53-foot yacht on the showroom floor, then asked to discuss it over lunch.

"The waiter comes over to take our order and the client asks to borrow a piece of paper from his pad," said Christiansen, CEO of Ferretti's Brazil group. "He starts working out a contract on it and we've agreed to it before I've asked for a sandwich."

BRAZIL'S STILL SPENDING! NO SLOWDOWN IN SIGHT

No Major Slowdown As Brazil Consumers Still Happily Spending

As consumer confidence dwindles in the U.S. , farther south in Brazil the local consumers are still happily spending and not even double digit interest rates are enough to truly scare them away. That’s because Brazilians on balance are fast moving into the middle class. More than half of the population is now solidly middle class compared to well less than that five years ago.  When looked at month over month, consumer spending rose a meager 0.2% in June as the government’s macroprudential measures to slow inflation by raising interest rates all year showed their strength.

BNDES eyes opening of Asian office

The Brazilian Development Bank, which is larger than the World Bank, is considering opening an office in Asia to support the international expansion of the country’s leading companies.

The plan reflects a boom in trade between Brazil and China and comes as the bank, known as BNDES, this week signed an agreement with the Japan Bank for International Co-operation to jointly invest up to $3bn in infrastructure projects.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – With disbursements totaling over R$178 billion last year, pundits are calling the BNDES (Banco Nacional do Desenvolvimento, or Brazilian National Development Bank) the most significant lender in the Western hemisphere. However, some economists have criticized the bank’s lending policies as being inconsistent with its own goals and priorities.

BRAZIL TAKES OVER SOUTH FLORIDA

Brazilians are not only visiting  Sunny Isles Beach, but in record numbers, they’re investing and keeping real estate in Miami and most of South Florida going.

Suddenly, everything seems to be turning hot green and yellow. Brazilians are snapping up beachfront luxury properties specially in the city of Sunny Isles and going all the way to downtown Miami, they are investing in everything from real estate to big franchises, and shopping like there is no tomorrow.

“The trend now is Brazil in Maimi”  they are here to stay and buy Real Estate. Brazil has become one of the most important economies in South America and we see it every day. Their power of aquisition keep the Brazilian visitors coming to Miami to bring us part of their culture and most importantly “Their money”.

BRAZIL'S GROWING IMPORTANCE TO SOUTH FLORIDA (and the USA)

Source: Miami Herald
The U.S. is taking its relationship with Brazil for granted, and that may hurt South Florida’s economy.

South Florida has long been Brazil’s primary gateway to the U.S. marketplace. During the first 11 months of 2010, Florida’s merchandise trade with Brazil topped $14.4 billion, a 27 percent increase over 2009.

Brazilian tourists spend more money in Florida than in any other state. Thirty-five percent of real-estate buyers in downtown Miami are Brazilians.

However, in 2009, China became Brazil’s primary trading partner, surpassing the U.S. for the first time ever. The following year, China and Brazil signed several trade agreements boosting trade and energy co-operation.

By 2010, China took top honors as Brazil’s largest foreign investor.

BRAZIL LEADS THE PACK OF EMERGING MARKETS WORLDWIDE

The latest survey undertaken by members of the US-based Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE) pointed to Brazil’s market leading the ranking – putting the country in front of China and India.

James Fetgatter, chief executive officer and panelist at the ADIT conference  in Forteleza (May 10th-12th), commented that there ‘has not been any other country in Latin America that has shown the results that Brazil has – in 2007, the country was not even mentioned.’  He also, however, commented that the main obstacles that need to be confronted are a lack of transparency, issues over investment security and heavy bureaucracy.

At the same conference, Gary Garrabrant chief executive officer and co-founder of Equity International pointed to the issues the country still faces with regards to infrastructure and the high rates of interest on real estate loans.  In his talk, he stated that, despite the challenges: ‘our goal is to change this situation with positive results which will compensate the constraints.’

THE REAL EMERGING MARKETS BOOM HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN

Why the Real Emerging Markets Boom Has Only Just Begun

The explosive growth potential of emerging markets is not mainstream news…yet.

We are still in what people will one day look back on as the “calm before the emerging markets storm.” A time when investors can still buy emerging markets growth at relatively cheap valuations. A time before the full force of the emerging markets bull market is felt.

To say it’s an exciting time for investors is an understatement. The emerging markets are about to take off on a rocket ride that could span a decade…and even more.

BRAZIL NEIGHBOR ARGENTINA POISED TO GROW IN 2011, BUT HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON BRAZIL ECONOMY

Argentina poised to grow 6% in 2011, but highly exposed to Brazil dependency

Strong demand in Brazil and Latin America has created the conditions for a stronger-than-expected economic rebound in Argentina, an IMF official said on Monday.
IMF economist Jorg Decressin recommends anti cyclical policies

“As far as growth is concerned, we are seeing a stronger rebound in Argentina than what we had expected, partly driven by very buoyant demand in the region including in Brazil” IMF economist Jorg Decressin told reporters in Washington.

However, he said Argentina needs to change some policies to be in stronger shape to withstand future shocks.

“Over time we believe that policies in Argentina will need to become somewhat less pro-cyclical than they are right now to rebuild policy space for the future. And if that happens, then the economy will also be in good shape to weather new shocks, if and when they arrive,” Decressin said.

BRAZIL TO INVEST $5.5 BILLION IN RENEWABLE ENERGY BY 2013

Brazil to Invest $5.5 Billion in Renewable Energy Sources by 2013

The Brazilian government earlier this month held a wind, hydroelectric and biomass auction that is expected to prompt US$ 5.52 billion in investments in renewable energies in Brazil. The resulting investments are expected to come primarily from private enterprise.

The auction, which contracted power from 89 wind farms, small hydroelectric plants and biomass plants, will add an installed capacity of 2,892.2 MW to the national energy matrix.

Brazil’s alternative energy auction was conducted through a process whereby the government first announced the energy demand stated by distributors to serve the market by 2013, and then electricity generators competed to provide energy to fill that demand at the lowest price.

BRAZIL BOOM: 9.1 MILLION FAMILIES PLAN TO BUY HOME IN NEXT 12 MONTHS

A total of 9.1 million families plan to buy real estate in Brazil over the next 12 months which is a huge increase since the Minha Casa Minha Vida (My House, My Life) program was introduced in 2009.

A recent survey carried out by the Data Popular Institute has found that 9.1 million Brazilian families intend to buy a property in Brazil over the next year. This purchase would allow them to leave rental accommodation and become property owners.

The subsidies and benefits included in the social housing program Minha Casa Minha Vida mean that buying instead of renting is an increasingly popular option. Minha Casa Minha Vida offers reduced mortgage interest rates to qualifying families so monthly mortgage payments are invariably cheaper than rent.

The number of potential buyers of Brazilian real estate has

WHILE THE WORLD BURST ITS BUBBLE, GOOD TIMES FOR BRAZIL HAVE JUST STARTED

It's been over 3 years since the majority of the developed world's housing markets saw their bubbles burst. Yet, along with a number of other so-called 'emerging' countries, Brazil has witnessed what many commentators and professionals have termed as the start of a long-term growth trajectory.

In 2010, renowned real estate developer Donald Trump, for example, talking about Brazil, commented to the Los Angeles Times that: "It is one of the few places in this troubled world I feel confident to make an investment."

And the modern day sage of value investing, Warren Buffett, told Fox News: "Brazil has cleverly positioned itself to become one of the world's greatest investment opportunities in modern times."

THE ONE PLACE TO BUY IN BRAZIL

North-Eastern Brazil is currently the focus of most international property investment and tourist development. It is where Brazilians head on holidays and boasts a yearly average temperature of 27 degrees and annual long sunshine, it enjoys the best climate in Brazil and its major cities offer a very stable investment environment.. Hotspots include Fortaleza, Natal, Recife, Salvador and Porto Seguro in Bahia.

For the next three days, we're going to run a special series of essays from property investment guru Ronan McMahon.
In these essays, Ronan (who comes to us courtesy of Pathfinder, the preferred real estate advertiser of IL) will discuss killer real estate deals in one of his favorite markets: Brazil’s northeast coast.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

No longer the “Country of the Future”… Brazil emerges as the   “Country of the Present”.

For a number of years, Brazil has been considered the “Country of the Future” due to its geographical size, growing population and abundant resources.  Historically Brazil continued to live up to this long standing reputation as the “Country of Future”, as it remained plagued by poor economic conditions, political instability,  poverty as well as immense socioeconomical and bureaucratic challenges.

In 1994, the governmental and business leaders launched a set of measures to stabilize the economy which, have resulted in Brazil securing a position as one of the top 10 largest economies in the world, an investment grade credit rating on its sovereign debt, and has set the stage for sustainable long-term growth for years ahead.  Today, Brazil is now positioned as the “Country of the Future” and is rapidly becoming one of the world’s economic powerhouses.
