This week we have received notice that to qualify for a Brazilian INVESTMENT VISA the minimum investment has been increased to the equivalent of R$ 200,000 because of the devalued US dollar if not
already submitted. (this minimum amount has been increased from R$150,000).

This means that the minimum investment at the current rate of exchange (US$ 1.00 = R$ 1.70 12/26/2010) is US$ 117,647.00. Will vary according to the rate of exchange at time of investment.

The same requirements for employment of Brazilian nationals (10 in a three year period).

Investments must be transferred by the Central bank to either a new or an existing company account in Brazil. The bank can supply this service once a bank account has been identified.

To qualify, the investment idea must be submitted as a PROJECT signed by an approved 'projetista' and be
approved by the Labor Ministry, and the money transferred to receive the visa.

Immigration visas to Brazil will be granted only to applicants who satisfy special requirements established by the Brazilian National Immigration Council or the Ministry of Labor. In principle, there are seven cases in which a foreigner can obtain a permanent residence visa in Brazil:

1. The administrator, manager or director of a professional or business corporation
This category is designed to cover inter-company transfers. Thus, the applicant must already be employed outside of Brazil by the parent company or by an affiliate or subsidiary of the company that proposes to employ him inside Brazil. However, there is no minimum time for that previous employment. Necessary documents for the first step will include:

The Law Number 60/2004 of the National Immigration Council which garanteed foreign individuals the right to legal residency throughout an investment of at least USD$50,000.00 was revoked.

The new law is the

Law Number 84 published on February 13, 2009 which brings many changes to the investment visa requirements, here are the most relevant:
(i) the amount of investment has changed to R$150,000.00 (Brazilian Reais);

Great question.  How can one truly answer that though without taking into account your personal lifestyle and cost of living.  While many things are cheaper in Brazil (such as real estate) certain luxuries that you may be used to are also more expensive.  Overall though Brazil is much less expensive then the United States in my opinion $2,000 USD per month is more than enough money to have a good life in Brazil.

My ears are still ringing.

At 3pm yesterday afternoon, Brazil completely shut down, and the entire nation sat transfixed in front of their televisions watching their team take on North Korea in the first round of the World Cup.  If you haven’t experienced this first hand, put it on your bucket list… it’s well worth it.

After each goal (Brazil scored two), the locals here celebrated as if World War III had just ended. I have never in my life witnessed such pure and honest joy in so much volume.

Frankly, that’s one of the reasons I like this country so much. As a culture, Brazilians are the least depressive and pretentious people that I can think of, and it certainly does one’s sense of perspective a bit of good to spend some time around them.

For would-be expats looking for a potential home, the Brazilian sense of ease may be a big draw, as well as the scenic vistas, cheap property, and warm weather.

In my opinion, though, one of the biggest benefits of spending time in Brazil is the prospect of becoming Brazilian. Over the next 10-years, I’m convinced that a Brazilian passport is going to be one of the most valuable in the world.

Think about it– when was the last time terrorists hijacked an airplane and threatened to kill all the Brazilians? These people have no enemies.
